Search Engine Optimization has been around since search engines started to index the World Wide Web in order to make it easier for the users to find what they were looking for. Immediately, companies who were competing online turned to various tricks and tactics to make sure their web pages were at the top of the search results. The competition quickly escalated, and search engine operators weren’t happy about being tricked. Some of the content that ended up at the top wasn’t the best, or most relevant to the users. They began updating their search algorithms to weed out spam and websites that came to the top by using questionable methods and techniques.
